Before I begin, I want to strongly encourage you to be baptized if you haven’t been. Don’t put it off. Jesus commanded it. There’s not a good reason not to. Just talk to me, and we’ll get it done.
News: wars, illness, violence, environment = Hopelessness
God’s Word: end of war, end of illness, peace, new creation = Hope
“God’s people don’t know God’s Word.” (Pastor Mark Vandertuig)
When reading the Bible always ask yourself two questions:
- What is God saying?
- How will I respond?
1 Corinthians 3:2 Milk – Fed to you. Meat – You hunt for. Milk = sermons, devotionals, Christian radio, and podcasts. Meat = You hunt through God’s Word for a message to you. If you only input milk, you’re malnourished, and you can’t grow up.
Thought about ten minutes of Bible reading, but led to the story of Joshua.
Moses burning bush “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5).
12 spies: “Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua” (Numbers 13:16).
“Would that we had died in this wilderness!” (Numbers 14:2).
400 years of slavery to Egypt, 40 years of slavery to their own fear
Everyone old enough to vote has been buried in unmarked graves
Then Moses dies, Joshua is appointed leader, and told over and over again to “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1).
Encounters one man alone in the desert, with a sword (Joshua 5:13-15) — how many times did Joshua hear Moses tell his story?
Not “Are you for us or our adversaries,” but I am for the Lord?
Today – not are you with me or against me, but am I for God?
If so, you’re going to have to go against the crowd again. Last time: let’s fight. This time: let’s not.
Invasion strategy: not flanks or position, but parade
Joshua’s dying words – he’s no longer ripped – Joshua 23:14, 24:15
What is God saying? There is a time when you will have to go against the culture and against the crowd and choose to trust the Word of God instead. Instead of hopelessness, you choose hope.
How will I respond? I’m going to marinade myself in the Word of God, because what you input with determines how you grow.
