The word pentecost comes from the Greek, meaning ‘fiftieth’, for the 50 days after the Passover, when the Festival of Weeks, a harvest festival — a Day of First Fruits — was celebrated by the faithful in Jesus’ time. On this same day after Easter, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles as promised, and they preached to everyone in Jerusalem. Thus a spiritual harvest was reaped: 3,000 souls were saved that day, and the Church as we know it was born!
