“How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”Sherlock Holmes, The Sign of The Four

The Program

One of the best parts of Sherlock Holmes is his ability to see connections between things. He takes in the details and solves the case before anybody else puts it together. It is exciting to read (or watch) as he assembles the clues and makes his deductions. Wouldn’t it be fun to be Sherlock Holmes? Well … what if we had clues and evidence and events all waiting for us to make our own deductions and solve our own cases?
This week, we will be investigating the Bible, putting together evidence and following where it leads. Like Sherlock Holmes, we will play the part of detectives: assembling evidence, unlocking secrets, and making deductions. There are stories in the Old Testament that are connected to the New Testament. Finding out how is going to be loads of fun! Help us crack the case at the Lee County Youth Center this June 12-15 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The Themes

The Snake & The Tree

In Genesis, the Snake tempts Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God prophesies to Eve that one of her descendants will crush the head of the snake. Later, the Israelites are attacked by fiery serpents in the wilderness, and God tells Moses to fashion a bronze snake and put it on a pole, and all who look at it are cured. Finally, Jesus takes is lifted up on a cross, taking the curse of the snake and destroying it once and for all.

The Blood of The Lamb

Abraham takes Isaac to Mt. Moriah. When they arrive, Isaac wonders what will be sacrificed. Abraham tells him God will provide the sacrifice, and indeed, a ram is found! Later, Moses instructs the Israelites to paint their doorposts with the blood of the Passover lamb so that God will spare them. Finally, John sees his cousin Jesus and says, “behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

Out of Darkness Into Light

Moses leads the Israelites out of slavery into freedom, and God does many signs and wonders by his hand. Before he dies, Moses says someday God will send another prophet like him — someone who will free God’s people from slavery to sin. Joshua then leads the Israelites across the Jordan river into the Promised Land. Eventually, another “Joshua” is born and like Moses, he leads God’s people out of darkness into the light of truth.

The Empty Tomb

Jesus was born in a barn in Bethlehem, and he grew up as the carpenter’s son in Nazareth. Later, he ministered throughout the land, preaching mighty sermons and performing miracles before all the people. Then one Friday, he was crucified and buried just outside the walls of Jerusalem…but on Sunday his tomb was found empty! He appeared to his disciples and sent them to spread the good news of the resurrection.

The Method

Workshop Rotation

Kids remember best when they can approach learning from several angles. Some are visual learners, some auditory; some need to get up and move around, while others do better with hands-on discovery. Our twenty-five minute workshops do just that. Each day, kids will rotate from room to room, discovering the connections between Bible stories in different ways and acquiring new detective skills. Then, they will apply these skills to help solve a massive puzzle — our daily mystery event. This way, we can pack a whole lot of learning and a whole bunch of fun into every morning!

Lee County Youth Center

Thanks to Miss Dusti and the folks at the LCYC, we are blessed to try bringing our out into the community. The old elementary school makes for an excellent place to set up VBS. We’ll begin and end each day in the main room and rotate through our workshops from one classroom to the next.
